Let us teach robots how to party

umbrellas

An umbrella party / robot swarm behavior experiment was held at MIT’s Jack Barry field in order to help researchers develop human like behavior for large groups of robots or robot “swarms”. Called “UP: The Umbrella Project” the event is a collaboration between MIT and Pilobolus, a dance company from Connecticut

Human group behavior observed from these events will be put into a simulator and then programmed to robots and allow them to perform as a group in applications such as the exploration of the martian landscape or as waiters serving cocktail drinks in a robot bar. What the researches would like to develop is an algorithm that would be applicable to hundreds, thousands, or even millions of robots to perform as a group with human like behavior.
